Gut microbes and colon cancer

COLORECTAL CANCER SCENARIO IN UAE
According to the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, the youngest person to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2017 was just 16, while the oldest was 91. The median age at which people in the UAE are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer is just 55 years while the age of diagnosis is 70 in the US.
According to a 2014 study 30 per cent of all cancers diagnosed in the UAE are colorectal cancers. It is the second most recorded cancer in the UAE and second highest cause of mortality due to cancer in the UAE.
Microbial mutation and antibiotic resistance
At present about 700,000 people a year die from drug-resistant infections. However, this global figure is growing relentlessly and could reach 10 million a year by 2050. This will be more than the number of deaths due to cancer, cholera, measles, diabetes and traffic accidents combined.

Water Dispenser Contamination – UAE Studies

Researchers from Sheikh Zayed University and Manipal University, Dubai, collected water samples from 49 bottled water dispensers and tested for microbiological quality.
Of the 49 water samples collected, 25 were found to contain either P. aeruginosa, or total coliform or both. P aeruginosa colonies count ranged between 4 to 51 colonies per 250ml of water sample.
In conclusion, overall microbiological quality of 25 water samples distributed through water dispensers was found unsatisfactory, and this could be attributed to the poor maintenance and improper hygienic conditions of the water dispensers.

CLEAN OUTSIDE – GERMS INSIDE?
Due to constant wetness, Water Dispensers attract germs like a magnet – from the neck of the bottles that go inside the water tank, from mouth of people who fill their personal bottles, from frequent usage by multiple people and from the surroundings – and provide a favorable environment for breeding and multiplication of bacteria and cyst.
Germs and bacteria, once colonized inside the water circuits and around the faucet of the water dispenser, soon transform themselves into BIOFILM – an invisible slimy layer along the wet surfaces of the tank, tubes and faucet.
BIOFILM – STRONG STAYING POWER
When sufficient number of Planktonic (free floating) bacteria come together in a wet medium – not necessarily the same species – they release slimy Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) and use EPS to stick to one another and to the surface of water body in a well-defined matrix. This assemblage of microbial cells that is irreversibly associated (not removed by gentle rinsing) with a surface and enclosed in EPS matrix is called BIOFILM. Under BIOFILM, bacteria continue to thrive, multiply and burst into water.

WHO launches health review after microplastics found in 90% of bottled water
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced a review into the potential risks of plastic in drinking water after a new analysis of some of the world’s most popular bottled water brands found that more than 90% contained tiny pieces of plastic.
In the new study, analysis of 259 bottles from 19 locations in nine countries across 11 different brands found an average of 325 plastic particles for every litre of water being sold.

In response to Orb Media’s report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has vowed to launch a safety review to assess the potential short- and long-term health risks of consuming microplastic in water. WHO’s global water and sanitation coordinator, Bruce Gordon:
“When we think about the composition of the plastic, whether there might be toxins in it, to what extent they might carry harmful constituents, what actually the particles might do in the body — there’s just not the research there to tell us.
We normally have a ‘safe’ limit but to have a safe limit, to define that, we need to understand if these things are dangerous, and if they occur in water at concentrations that are dangerous. The public are obviously going to be concerned about whether this is going to make them sick in the short term and the long-term.”
